Published: -
Notes: Possibly a London dinner anticipating the Irish tour? See Letter 1813 for Weston's advice on accommodation.

Content Summary: He encloses P.O. and will pay off arrears by small additional instalments. They are looking for a house as their time is up at midsummer, when they want to raise the rent. The things at Fletchers are safely housed and would be of little use to him. His father could send for them. If he is sending a present could it be something ornamental and useful? There are some pretty plated cruets to hold sauce bottles ... The baby is well and when it is warmer they will get him photographed. Love to the aunts. (Postscript:) Call on Vernon (?) who will be glad to see him.

Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He has received letters from his father and aunts about presents, which he will answer when they arrive. He writes to inform his father of a most important business engagement. He has signed a contract with Bateman to act at the Lyceum or any U.K. theatre for 3 years at £15 per week for the first year, £17 for the second and £19 for the third. Beginning the next September it will be for not less than 10 months each year. He is to be leading comedian and in leading character parts. Bateman has the Lyceum lease for 7 years from September and all will be produced to a high standard. What does his father think? (Postscript:) He has £1 per week extra in the provinces - perhaps in Bristol?
Published: L. Irving, p.172.
Notes: With a typewritten transcript.

Date: 1871, April, 26 Monday
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He is again in the old quarters until the June quarter day - it is very small but something suitable is difficult to find. Dr O'Callaghan has returned finally to England on a pension of £900 per year. Flo[rence] is well and happy and delighted to have him back and seems to have taken a new view of everything. She is an altered woman and devoted to the boy who is fine. The "benefit" was a big success. He sends 3 papers and a number of 'London Society' with something about him in connection with Dickens, written by Edmund Yates, and he would like it cut and pasted. Barham (?) has his divorce. He has mislaid his father's last letter and asks him to repeat questions. (P.S.) He encloses a p.o.v. for £2.
Published: L. Irving, p.186 (in part, with wrong date).
Notes: Surgeon General Daniel O'Callaghan was his wife's father. The benefit was probably that on (25th?) March 1871 described by Brereton, p.106. With a typewritten transcript in THM/37/1/11 wrongly assigned to September.
