Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He sees Macmillan was about to publish a collection of articles contributed to 'Macmillan's Magazine' by Canon Ainger, including one entitled 'Mr Irving's Hamlet & its critics' written more than 30 years before. He would not normally demurr however severe on himself but he knows the author regretted it and wished it had never been written. Some years before he talked to Canon Ainger at Bristol as an old friend and recalled that they has first met at the house of Sir Theodore Martin, and Irving had brought up the article. Ainger said "That ought not to have been written! I am utterly ashamed of it". Irving is sure he would not wish it to appear in any collection of his writings, especially as the original publication was anonymous. Irving thinks it right to call their attention to this lest it should injure his memory.
Published: -
Notes: A draft written by Louis Austin with one correction in Irving's hand. A deleted passage asks this to be called to the attention of the editor (Henry C.Beeching), but the final paragragh takes a stronger line. Not signed. See Letters 326-29.
